Our situation is complex - my wife and I immigrated to Canada in 2008 and held OHIP. Then we moved t o the US for two years and returned a little over a month ago. Plus, our daughter was born in the US and is now with us in Canada. She is a US citizen and her application for Canadian PR is pending...

I see. So would you need it for 3 months or are you sponsoring your daughter?

We are sponsoring our daughter. Our application to sponsor her was approved a few days ago, although it will take 15 months more for her to get PR. As for us, we would technically be eligible for in three months - but we need to travel for two months in December (until early Feb). So OHIP will kick in for us only in May 2014 (three months from Feb).

Or I can do the whole family (it will be cheaper) and then once you get your provincial coverage we will get a different one for your daughter. We can do a few options.

It's cheaper to buy for a family, because you only pay for 2 people.

Whether we get insurance as a family, or a separate policy for my daughter, would depend on (a) what kinds of coverage are available both jointly and severally, and (b) what kind of policy my daughter will be eligible to get after we get OHIP.

Completely up to you. You get to choose the amount of coverage you would like to have. Your daughter will have the same kind of coverage, because that's the only kind available for people without provincial coverage.

Let me check the rates. How old is the oldest person? And how long would she need it for? Much coverage do you think you want to have?
